Tampa Bays Rays @ Toronto Blue Jays
7:07 PM EDT, August 6, 2010
Rogers Centre, Toronto, Ontario
Starting Pitchers:
Tampa Bay: Garza (11-5, 4.11 ERA)
Toronto: Cecil (8-5, 3.77 ERA)
Weather: 22°C 72°F, Partly Cloudy
Wind: NW 22 kph, gusts to 33 kph (L-R)
Roof should be open - but I don't know yet. It's been trying to rain all day, but conditions seemed to have changed, calmed down now here next to the big lake. should be a nice night to be out and see a ball game.
Umpires:
Pat Tabler, babbling a few less irrelevancies than usual tonight, relates an interesting stat! The Jays have given up the fewest runs of any team in baseball since the all star break (60).
Top of 6
* Rodriguez sliding into second, trying to break up the double play, slides in with his left foot really high as Hill does the give-ground-jump out of his way - almost a Ty Cobb type slide.

Matt Garza has a 1.60 ERA at Rogers Centre. Sign him Blue Jays as soon as you are able.
Bottom of 7
* Kapler throws a strike to the plate from way deep left on the RBI double by Overbay and cuts down Adam Lind trying to score behind Bautista. As well as Kaplers throw, Shoppach blocks the plate nicely preventing the second run, and ending the inning.
Just like the Indian's Carlos Santana did in Boston the other night (where he tore a ligament on the outside of his left knee - out for the year), Shoppach shot his leg out across the plate, so the runner, Adam Lind naturally hits it like the tape at the finnish line, right in the middle, at the knee joint. The difference here was that Shoppach had no weight on his leg, and he was sliding across on the back of his heel I think - so no spikes in the dirt to anchor the leg and thus, snap ligaments.
As well, Lind doesn't slide (or run) effectively - so no danger what-so-ever. :)
I think it looked like Lind tripped when he saw the catcher - he was so surprised, all of sudden, something in his way - and he sort of stumbled into the barrier.
:) Just thought I'd get that rib in there. It's been a long time since I've seen a guy who otherwise looks so athletic, but runs so poorly. And it's not just god-given in-ability; from this observers point of view, he doesn't seem to practice the fundamentals. I've notice several things he does that by practicing foot-work would make him much better on the base-paths.
Not in this case though - Kapler nailed him! Great throw.
Top of the 9th
Jason Bartlette's AB was a thing of beauty.
After about 12 pitches with the count stuck at 2-2, Barlette scorches a bouncing line drive down the 3rd base line that Encarnacion must make a play and throw on. The 3rd base Umpire, Larry Vanover you can see, is yelling and waving foul, but it's too late. Edwin - who can't see behind and maybe can't hear him, or he can't stop his motion with out injury, or his mind is already made up as the ball comes off the bat - whichever is the case, the third baseman continues his motion and completes the play.
The call is so close that when we finally do see a good replay the ripped ball is only inches off the foul corner of the bag as it slices foul - a really good call by Vanover who was blocked partially by Encarnaicion, I thought.
But now I'm thinking, 'Oh dam, now that going-through-the-motions throw has spent our luck in this long AB; Bartelette's going to tie it up.
The next pitch is rifled up the middle, pitcher Kevin Gregg gets glove on it but then it dribbles out towards CF until Aaron Hill intercepts it and runs to 2nd base ahead of Longoria for the force - and the game.
Whew! The baseball gods were toying with us there.
The game ended at 9:30 PM, a 2 hour, 23 minute pitchers duel.

See you tomorrow for a matinee, Game 2 of this series starting at 1:07!
It's James Shields (10-9) vnot Litsch - who was just scratched for the year, he's having ligament surgery on his hip some day very soon. The name of his replacement not yet been published.
