Below I've posted a list from the Jays/MLB site that shows the TV broadcast schedule for the rest of the 2010 season.
Highlighted are the 4 games that will be on free TV over the next 9 days. Viewers across Canada have to call Rogers Communication Inc. and have the 'free preview' enabled for the new premium level "Sportsnet-ONE" channel - which next year will cost money to see. I wonder how many games will cost exra next year, or the year the Jays finally make the play-offs? We are on a slippery slope here sports fans, do not fall for it.
Personally, I can't watch these "free" games because I can't phone up Rogers and tell them to set me up, it's not my name on the contract with Rogers, it's my landlords, and he ain't buying, now, next year, or anytime - and good for him.
I'm holding out for a future media market place that uses the old TV network model, everything for free paid for through advertising. Not because I'm cheap, but because everyone having access to the same information is an important part of the liberal democratic state - it's like the public library system; it ensurers everyone who wants to learn can, it ensures everyone is on a level playing field when it comes to education and the law, it means law makers can't pass law against the common good because the commons, informed through public access to all the information, can hold them accountable. Another foundation stone of the liberal democratic state is the Judicary which uses logic, science and enlightened discoarse to make rulings on points of law, and the legality of the laws themselves. This system relies on free access to information by all, not just an elite who have the advantage of being born into wealth.
And I'll allow myself one small hyperbole on this: "Pay-for-view is evil".
