Listening to Jerry Howarth and Gregg Zaun on the radio again tonight. Not missing the beautiful TV broadcast, at-all. Lots of fun on the radio - Zauny is in fine form tonight singing the Blue Jays song from the '80's (70's?) 'Let's-Play-Ball' - then later doing his patented sponsor call about some phone thing, almost going too far at one point - then rescued by Howarth with a apropos segue back into the game. The two are perfect together. Zaun's off the cuff stuff works as a counter point to Jerry's perfect call of the game and old-timey references.
Could the days of sharing the play by play be over? This combo needs to stay together in my opinion - for years to come if that is possible. These two peas in a pod are one of a kind.
A line came to mind the other day - a product I expect, of listening to more radio broadcasts of Blue Jays games lately - and this isn't dissing anyone on the TV side, just an observation about the medium in general - in these days of dumbed-down (lower cost) programming...
'He's got the smarts for television'
(as opposed to 'A face for radio').
